Reggie Wayne is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday after suffering a knee injury during Sunday night’s game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos, according to ESPN. Wayne sprained his knee while planting and turning back for a slightly underthrown, but otherwise routine pass from quarterback Andrew Luck. Wayne walked off the field with assistance and did not return to the game.
The timetable would put Cushing on track to return to the Texans this season if the team were to make a deep postseason run, but at 2-5 the team’s playoff chances are slim at best. More likely, Cushing has suffered a season-ending injury for the second year in a row. He appeared in just five games in 2012 before being sidelined by a torn ACL, also caused by a low block to his left knee.
In place of Cushing the Texans may have to turn to Justin Tuggle, an undrafted rookie out of Kansas State. Tuggle has appeared in five games this season, and has five tackles.
There is still no word yet on the severity of Wayne’s injury. No doubt the results of Monday’s MRI should give a clearer picture of how much time the wideout will miss, if any. If Wayne sits, the Colts will turn to Darrius Heyward-Bey and T.Y. Hilton to carry the passing game in the wide receiver corps.
